Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to question particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
