A person who laced treats with sedative and provided them to children at a youth camp in Leicestershire has admitted sexual offences against two children who were nine and ten years old.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight minors and a grown-up fell ill at the location in July.

The senior citizen, from the Nottinghamshire area, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he appeared at the courthouse on Friday.

However, he disputed one particular crime he was facing, which was concerning a young boy.

The defendant was held in detention before a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, detailed Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She stated his targets were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a summer camp which he managed.

Ruben played a "candy game" with the children, the legal counsel explained, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and request they to consume candy "as fast as possible".

She told the court the man had conducted this practice with the young males "repeatedly", and minors had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She explained the defendant had been able to explain this repeatedly as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had concerns in recently.

Mrs Prior KC added: "This year his stepchild had suspicions about the activities, with valid cause.

"They decided to examine in the individual's items."

The prosecutor stated materials including infant oil, Vaseline and injection devices were found, and his family member alerted the authorities about his suspicions.

She explained the man proceeded to conduct the "candy game" with six children that time - July 26th - and they were all ill the following morning.

"Authorities" had not responded by that stage," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, earlier informed that it was investigating Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.

The legal representative said the minors were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so the stepson notified the authorities once more.

She stated the man then engaged in the "treat game" in a space of five children.
