EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Additional Updates in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
