Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
