Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations indicate the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
City officials announced they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the community for details.
A senior representative said the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on online, referring to the killing of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in 2020.
